(30) Days of Me: Day 30 [Now It's Done]

I did it! Today is day 30 of (30) Days of me! And it's a whatever tickles my fancy today and you know what tickles my fancy? Giving one last shout out to you guys. Initially this blog started as a place for me to go to put down my thoughts, to remember how I was feeling. Then for whatever reason people started following and even more surprising, they stayed following! So now I'm writing for all of you as well. So thank you all. Seriously.

On another note I won free tickets today for an Against Me! concert which is more awesome for me than you know, so that's how I will start out my weekend.

And at the risk of jinxing it, I've got pretty awesome (read: adorable) news, I'm trying to adopt a kitten and I'm 99% approved for this adorable kitten. She can't come home yet (she's a runt and only weighs 3 lbs), but I'm going to hang out with her on Monday! I'm excited!

Commence with the jealousy :) Also sidenote: I move to Cali in 26 days and can hopefully get started on those hopes and dreams of mine.

Thanks again all of you for reading my random thoughts!

(30) Days of Me: Day 29 [Stay Awake (Dreams Only Last for a Night)]

Second to last day, seriously?!?! Today's post is all about my hopes, dreams and plans for the future. I mean, I could go on all day with things I hope and dream for, especially now with a huge move coming up.

1) I hope the move goes seamlessly and that it was really the right move for me to make, it's where I should be.
2) I hope to finally meet someone I truly want to be with, someone I can talk with about anything... don't we all want that? Tegan Quin once said "The best part of having a relationship is getting to call the person or lay down next to them and tell them all the crazy things that happened to you all day long. And in the end that's what it's all about kids. It's not about the sex, it's not about the money that they give you or whatever. It's not about how good looking they are, it's about, can they listen to you talk for hours and hours about stupid shit that doesn't matter. And if they can then you're meant to be together forever. Even if that means you have to call them 100 times, that's okay." That's what I hope to find.
3) I hope to be successful in grad school... I have a terrible habit of letting people convince me I can't do things, I also often convince myself I can't do things.
4) I want a kitten, well I wanted a puppy, but that's too much work, not that kittens aren't but I know I can handle the move and a kitten, if anything I think the kitten will help the move. So far I have names narrowed down to "Nugget" "Tonks" or "She who must not be named" lol
5) I want to be happy, not saying have been unhappy lately, but I want to continue to be happy.
6) I want to just have a good time, and enjoy life above everything else.

Those are my main hopes for the future, what are your dreams?

P.S. Check out me and Mr.O's guest playlist on Allison's blog!

(30) Days of Me: Day 28 [Jaded (These Years)]

Oh my gosh, today's topic is my year in great detail, thing is... I can't really remember everything that has happened this year. All I do know is that I've had a great year.

1) I graduated!!! I mean I'm a college grad, it's crazy!
2) I got into USC which is even crazier.
3) Met with two bloggers, Lola and Mr. O, it was awesome.
4) Went to a bunch of concerts.
5) Spent time with those I love.
6) Had a lot of fun.

I hope you're years have been just as amazing. What is something really cool you've done this year?

(30) Days of Me: Day 27 [6 Months]

Oh man, I'm supposed to recap my whole month... good thing there's Twitter! Here's a summary:

1) Worked a lot... a lot, a lot.
2) Went home twice.
3) Hung out with a lot of friends.
4) Have blogged everyday for 27 days?!?!
5) Went bowling and bowled pretty terribly.
6) Watched a lot of movies.
7) Signed a lease for Los Angeles.
8) Went out a few times.
9) Watched a whole lot of soccer.
10) Planned a going away party.
11) Went to a wedding in Georgia, met up with Mr. O
12) Got really into the band The Pretty Reckless.
13) And then everything I listed in yesterdays post!

It's been a whirlwind month, this summer is just flying by, does anyone else feel like that?

(30) Days of Me: Day 26 [This Week The Trend]

Oh man, it's actually been quite the long week now that I'm looking back at my Twitter to see what I did haha. I'm going to do a list for this post, even though the directions are to give my week in great detail, here we go.

1) Drove to Georgia and back for my cousins wedding, it was beautiful and her and Michael are both amazing.
2) Sold my Warped Tour ticket because it conflicted with my move... this will be the first Warped since 2003 I don't attend. Sad, but happy to move.
3) Saw Toy Story 3 in IMAX teared up quite a bit.
4) Worked 5:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. everyday, sucks.
5) Got addicted to the show Pretty Little Liars.
6) Drove home to Paw Paw.
7) Saw Knight and Day, decided I'm cool with Tom Cruise again.
8) Bought concert tickets... makes up for missed Warped Tour.
9) Started the ball rolling on something I'm pretty excited about, I'll keep it a secret for now ;)
10) Saw Karate Kid and loved it. I kind of want to see it again... right now.

That's about it for my week, doesn't seem like much when I put it that way haha. Hope you all had exciting weeks!

(30) Days of Me: Day 25 [The Day I Lost My Voice]

So I'm not sure how I feel about this whole week of topics, I don't think my life is exciting enough to go into great detail... luckily I had an eventful day today.

I woke up this morning and got ready, packed a weekend bag and headed home. I didn't even go all the way home and had to make a quick stop to meet an old basketball coach/friend of mine for lunch. It's always a good time when we get to catch up and she's so supportive, it's basically awesome. After lunch I went to the car wash and vacuumed my car and then headed back to my grandparents house... here's where it gets real exciting. I got out my travel tool kit and ripped apart my car and installed a new stereo in my car haha... typical Friday lol. Here's a picture of my car mid process.

What my car looks like with the dash removed

That whole project took about an hour and then I went with my mom to visit a family friend and then headed to Kalamazoo (there's literally nothing to do in Paw Paw but rip apart cars and install stereos haha). I came home because tomorrow (well technically today) we have a birthday party, a baby shower, and a graduation party to go to so we picked up presents for all of those events then went to see "Knight and Day" with my best friend Alison. If you've haven't been around for long Alison is my best friend from age 5, she's the kindest, most loyal friend anyone could ask for and it's great every. single. time we hang out.

Side note: Tom Cruise is cool in my book again, as long as he stays off couches.

After the movie I went to see my aunt and then looked around online for kittens/payed some bills. THE BEST thing I did today though was buy tickets for what will be my first big concert in California: PARAMORE/TEGAN & SARA/NEW FOUND GLORY!!!!! Anyone who knows anything about me will know that T&S and Paramore are 2 of my 3 favorite bands of all time, No Doubt being the other (who I saw last summer with Paramore). I'm already so excited and the concert isn't even until September haha.

Now I'm about to get some sleep before the string of parties tomorrow. Hope your days were great!! Can't believe it's already been 25 days of this thing, time flies when you're having fun.

(30) Days of Me: Day 24 [I've Got Friends]

Oh my gosh, we're down to the last week!! In honor of everyone sticking around, for my last whatever tickles my fancy I'm going to give a shout-out to those that keep me going, my favorite blogs. Let's do the dang thing...

Krystal: She's a budding photographer, she's got AMAZING style, an adorable puppy, and to top it off she lives in SWITZERLAND! Can you believe it?!?! She has been there from the beginning with my blog and is always one to pop up with a supportive comment. Basically she's awesome. Check it out.

Mr. O: It's no secret that Mr. O is my musical soulmate, and basically he's the second most awesome person I know, besides myself haha just kidding. But in all seriousness his blog is full of musical goodness and he's one of the most loyal bloggers around. Do it up!

____J: Jamie is the coolest, you guys listen, she makes the best cookies, I can't even handle it haha. I wish I could eat her cookies every day... although I would probably be obese like whoa. Also Jamie is the most artistic person I know, so that's awesome. Follow her!

Brent: Brent deserves a shout-out for many reasons, but namely he has put up with my incessant questions about LA and will continue to for a while I'm sure. He's about to start screenwriting school how bad ass is that?!?!

Lola: Just do it... seriously. She is hilarious, smart and amazingly nice, met up with her in Jersey and shenanigans were had by all. Plus, she has awesome taste in music.

Allison: Allison is another music-y blogger, and she even goes a step further, giving you playlists to check out. She's also from Canada... so there's that.

Follow 'em! Do it now! You won't regret it!

(30) Days of Me: Day 23 [Video Killed the Radio Star (cover)]

It was hard to narrow down a video since I spend a lot of time just watching videos online but I had to go with STEALTH CAT. I just love this video, it makes me want to train my pets to be ninjas haha. Enjoy that, and because I love internet videos, here are some more!

Oh my gosh I have so many more, let me know if you ever need suggestions!

(30) Days of Me: Day 22 [Spiderwebs]

First things first, the website I'm going to suggest to you guys today is:

Sporcle.com

Your life just changed and I bet you didn't even know it! Sporcle is the best time waster known to man. It's a trivia site with quizzes of every topic you could ever think of, grab some friends and race or just sit and do them yourself, either way it's amazing, and I credit it with getting me lower marks on my exams haha

Secondly, big ups to Krystal who sent me an awesome post card from Switzerland, I feel so special. Krystal's probably my longest follower and I wouldn't have it any other way, she's too good to me!

Thirdly, tomorrow a bunch of my friends and I are going to Toy Story 3 in IMAX, I'm so pumped! There's about 10 of us so should be good times. I'll keep you updated.

(30) Days of Me: Day 21 [Yummy]

I don't cook much, ask anyone I know... the most complicated thing I've ever made is Macaroni and Cheese, normally I eat whatever is the fastest to make, and I can be eating in 3 minutes or less. I did somewhere along the way learn to make a mean cheesecake though. So here is your Day 21 recipe.

Chocolate Lovers Cheesepie

3 packages (8 oz. each) cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup of sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups (12 oz. package) Hershey's mini chips semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
1 extra serving size packaged graham cracker crust 9 oz.
2 tablespoons whipping cream

Heat oven to 450 F

Beat cream cheese and sugar in large bowl with mixer until well blended. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Stir in 1-2/3 cups small chocolate chips; pour into crust.

Bake 10 minutes, without opening oven door, reduce temperature to 250 F; continue baking 30 minutes or just until set. Remove from oven to wire rack. Cool completely. Cover; refrigerate until thoroughly chilled.

Place remaining 1/3 cup chocolate chips and whipping cream in small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave 20 to 30 seconds or just until chips are melted and mixture is smooth when stirred. Cool slightly; spread over top of cheese-pie. Refrigerate 15 minutes or until topping is set. Cover; refrigerate leftover.

BOOM instant classic. I made it for everyone and shocked them all, then got continual requests for it.

(30) Days of Me: Day 20 [Enjoy the Silence]

I have a lot of hobbies, I like to bounce around, and with my terrible habit of only sleeping 6 hours a day I have a lot of time. For ease of typing, I'm going to list this just like yesterday.

1) Well clearly I like to blog, so there's that.

2) I love to read, any book, any time.

3) I love to do jigsaw puzzles, and no... I'm not 80 haha.

4) I keep a "journal" of funny comics and quotes I love, it's about as creative as I get.

5) I can't really think of another one, I love to go to concerts, is that a hobby?

6) I love to eat ice cream, I'm an ice cream connoisseur of sorts.

7) I like to just sit and play the guitar, especially when no one is listening, and there is no pressure.

That's all I can think of though I'm sure there're more. Ah well, you what are your hobbies, do we share some!

(30) Days of Me: Day 19 [I'm Awesome]

Alright, I couldn't think of what to write about for this day of talents so, I'm going to list it up and just give you a bunch.

1) I'm really good at finding new bands, like not in the conceded "I'm so indie I'm better than you way" but, I am really good at it... for example, the Spouse that is the title track for this post had well over 20 plays by the time I heard it on the radio. Like a boss.

2) I can play guitar, I'm not amazing by any means, but I'm alright and can totally learn the songs I want to and play em to impress people. Remembering them, now that's another story.

3) I'm pretty good at drawing, not just like doodling something amazing, but if I'm looking at a picture or an object I can draw it no problem.

4) MATH, I'm not just good at math, I'M AWESOME (see what I did there), but seriously, it's the reason I chose my major and after making it through Calc 4, I'd hope I'm good at it.

5) I have an uncanny ability to remember actors names, characters, and quotes from anything I see... my friends all think it's weird, and while it's definitely not useful it's always good for winning the name game.

6) I'd classify myself as mildly athletic, I can usually hold my own in most sports I try. And I'm great at others (cough cough golf, basketball, soccer cough cough). I REALLY want to join a roller derby team like whoa, I'd love to get to just plow people over for the hell of it.

7) It's not so much a talent as a "I-Love-To-Do-This" But I love to build things, I wouldn't call it a hobby, but if I ever get the chance I jump at building things. Sidenote: My tool kit is awesome, B&D, 150 piece... like a BOSS.

8) Last "talent" of the day is my ability to drive a manual transmission, aka a stick shift. My second car was one, and I know a lot of people have this ability, but I think it's a good skill to have haha.

Sidenote, not related to talents, I'm in Atlanta for my cousin's wedding and got the chance to meet up with Mr. O for the evening!! Proceed with the jealousy... it was good times, and one of the best music talks I've had in a while (going to Coachella was talked about). Plus I got to have chicken pesto pizza, delicious!

(30) Days of Me: Day 18 [Most Wanted]

Alright, today is whatever tickles my fancy, and I'm going to do what I want, or more specifically let you know what I want. This post is all about things I want to get, but can't afford at the moment. This is a reminder post for me so I can remember what to ask for when anyone wants to know what I want haha.

First off iPhone 4... it's gonna happen, I'm eligible for upgrade and I can't wait, I've had the original iPhone, now on the 3g and I love them all, can't wait!!!!!
I lost my flash drive recently and I totally want to replace it with this (I also lost my external hard drive, but they don't make Star Wars externals). Plus Darth Vader is the man. 'Nuff said.

If this doesn't get in my life right now, I'm going to be pretty upset. Daria was one of my main shows back in the day, and can't wait to own this one day.

I also need this in my life, I've watched all the Dr. Horrible I can online, but having it in my apartment would be amazing. Seriously, amazing.

I just really want to read these books, I've heard their awesome and there's a movie coming out soon, gotta read it before then.

I've been meaning to grip up these Skull Candy headphones just haven't had the chance yet, but soon *hopefully* I love Skull Candy and everything they make. They'd be great to listen to the title song by CULTS, check it out!

(30) Days of Me: Day 17 [The Art of Living]

Today's topic on (30) Days of Me is a favorite piece of art, in San Francisco there is an artist named Lawrence Yang, I've been following his blog/career for about 2.5 years now and love literally almost everything he makes. The colors, the feeling, EVERYTHING, it was tough, but I narrowed it down to my favorite:

I wish I could look at this everyday (I may or may not anyway, his site is amazing to look at and just browse for hours. If I'm being honest, his paintings are among the few I respect. I could see myself owning every single one of them. Check out his site Blow at Life, seriously do it, dude's going to be huge, you heard it here first!

(30) Days of Me: Day 16 [Don't Take the Girl]

Today's challenge is a song that makes me cry, the first song I thought of was Halloween by Meg and Dia, but seeing as I have recently talked about that in this post, I started thinking of other songs that make me cry. The next song that came to mind was from a very long time ago, when my mom was still deciding what I listened to and she decided COUNTRY.

This song is by Tim McGraw, called Don't Take the Girl, it still makes me tear up a bit, but I remember it used to make my mom and her friends cry so bad that they would sometimes pull the car over until the song finished.

Such a sad song, so pretty though. Probably the reason I still have faith in some country music... SOME.

(30) Days of Me: Day 15 [Pretend That This Is Fiction]

I don't actually think I've ever read a fanfic before, maybe when I was in middle school, but never found one I kept up with. So instead, I'm going to give you guys some random stuff I've found around the internet, fair trade?!? Alright good.

I hope you enjoy those awesome pictures, until tomorrow.

(30) Days of Me: Day 14 [Textbook]

Some of my favorite non-fiction books are Chelsea Handler's memoirs, "My Horizontal Life", "Are You There Vodka, it's Me Chelsea", and "Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang." Chelsea is one of my favorite comedians and while I question the validity of most of the stories, that doesn't keep them from being hilarious.

However, my FAVORITE non-fiction book is actually a set of books (try not to call me predictable, mmmk?) "ON, IN, AT" by Tegan and Sara. I love these books for the mere fact that they give you a glimpse into music rarely seen by non-musicians. The books chronicle the bands life over a year in their lives, according to their words. To explain them a little better, I'm going to use their words to describe the books (description from site):

ON: includes writing from Dallas Green (of City and Colour and Alexisonfire), Northern State, An Horse and us. Photographer Lindsey Byrnes also captures the behind the scenes activity on the road. The book allows a glimpse of the imagery and moments that you don't usually get to see. We wanted to show you the perspective that we as a band sees, even from on stage.

IN: is an in depth look at our trip to New Orleans in November of 2008 to write music together. It was the first time in 14 years that we have attempted this, so it had to be recorded! Photographer Ryan Russell was there with us to capture every moment of the week long session. The book includes transcripts and interviews with Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie and other friends that we called and bothered while we were in New Orleans.

AT: explores our last tour in support of The Con which took place in Australia and gives each of the 5 band members the chance to share their experiences through journals and photos. The book also includes more great photos by Lindsey Byrnes.

The reason I love these books is that they give you a chance to be a part of the experience, and who doesn't want to be in a band. If you like the band, they just released a trimmed down version that costs/ships for less, if you've got some money lying around, I would recommend investing in them.

(30) Days of Me: Day 13 [Booksmart Devil]

Today's subject is a fictional book and since I've already listed Harry Potter I'll go with another book I love: THE BOOK THIEF

"The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak is an amazingly beautiful novel set in Germany during World War II. I don't want to give away any of the plot but I will try to explain why it's so great. First off the book has a very interesting set up, the entire novel is narrated by Death, explaining his thoughts while retrieving souls whose lives were ended by the war. The novel takes you through every emotion; sadness, laughter, relief, and guilt. This gauntlet of emotions is extremely cathartic and left me wanting to reread the book instantly upon finishing. This book is guaranteed to leave it's mark on every reader who picks it up, so go pick it up!

Title song is by Silversun Pickups!

(30) Days of Me: Day 12 [Winds of Change]

Hey guys! It's whatever tickles my fancy day and you might notice that this blog has changed, NEW TITLE, NEW LAYOUT (working out the kinks still!). I've been thinking about it for a while and this seemed like as good a time as ever haha. By request of Mr. O I have been asked to send off COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE with the answer to the infamous question. You guys ready for this??

The best kind of Doritos ever are

COOLER RANCH, was there ever any question?!?! All the cool kids eat Cooler Ranch. Trust me. I named the blog this because I truly believe you can find out a lot about a person through this question. I always make sure to ask people haha, in honor of this occasion, what is your favorite?!?!

Funny story when we were in Russia these were the potato chip options: Crab, Dill and Bacon.... what the hell kind of options are that?!?! None of those sound even remotely good.

Anyways, I've had that title since the beginning and as I'm about to begin this whole new stage of my life, it's time for a fresh start right? I have been considering the name change for a while and although this is a total ripoff of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, I think it's so appropriate. Really, all of us are just working to survive.

Also, if you haven't heard of Fitz & The Tantrum (the title track) do it now, seriously, they're awesome.

Now I know what you're wondering, what's with the background right? Little known fact, I'm obsessed with ninjas haha just kidding, well sort of, I love everything about the asian culture. My best friend Alison knowing that I love Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 AND being the best, best friend a person could have, got me this kick ass Kill Bill replica set.

It has the Bride's sword, Bill's sword, and Budd's, seriously, she's the greatest. We have recently come to learn that they are very useful for slicing fruit in mid air, good times. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the change! Who knows how long it will last. Cheers!

(30) Days of Me: Day 11 [Maybe Memories]

Today's post is all about pictures of me lately... for comparison purposes, you will note that in none of them do I have a perm or any awesome poses... I've lost my rock-star status haha. I couldn't narrow it down to one, so here's a bunch!

This is my friend Ashley, a fellow engineering student, we met on study abroad in Russia, and she is one of my BFFs. I like to refer to her as Regina, and she calls me Janice, but unlike in Mean Girls, we're friends. Seriously though, she's awesome, and an identical twin! Doesn't get much more awesome than that.

I don't know if you guys can even realize the epicness of this photo, like EPIC... soak it in, I'm about to drop some knowledge. This is me in New Jersey on spring break with the one, the only, LOLA LAKELY. That's right, this really happened. Good times were had by all and I'm trying to plan my return trip for more epicosity. I'll keep you posted.

This girl is seriously the best, we met freshman year and quickly became best friends, we have more inside jokes than I ever thought possible and she's one of the nicest people on the planet. Also fun fact about me... I'm Allyssa's bodyguard, it's no big deal, but I do have "bidness" cards that state this fact. Let me know if you'd like one. No matter how many games of beer pong we lose, teammates for life.

This picture just cracks me up, we're having a party and I'm clearly ecstatic to almost be done. This pretty much expresses how we party haha just kidding, I just like to give hugs.

This one is my friend Jeamie, she's legit from Ireland and I just love to listen to her accent, it kills me, I wish I had one. She plays Field Hockey for MSU and is teaching me the wonders of Ireland (Example: Name one cool person from Ireland. "Bono" REALLY?!?! That's your answer!?) I also know that she hates when I ask her if it's like the movie P.S. I Love You, so I ask her that question often haha. This picture is me wearing her scooter helmet at the bar... I had it on for about 15 minutes, with the visor down. oh man, what can I say, graduation bar crawl leads to ridiculous things.

This las picture is on graduation day, left to right; Emily (roommate), Stephanie (roommate), Me (note my graduation shoes), Dr. Maleck (my favorite professor of all time, he's awesome, and his awesome recommendation letter got me into USC, so thanks Dr. Maleck!), Chuck, Mike and Danny (engineering friends). I love all of the friends I've made here at MSU and they mean the world to me.

It's been an amazing 4 years I will never forget, if you're reading this, we're friends, and I love you all. Seriously, it's been more than I could ever have hoped for. I'm more than excited about the next few years.

(30) Days of Me: Day 10 [When You Were Young]

It's Day 10 and you know what that means, a picture of me taken over 10 years ago. And lucky for you, I am an only child so I have pictures galore, so, I'm going to give you 5! Let's do this thing all chronological like.

Oh me? I'm just hanging out with my Jammie Pie, what're you up to? Please note that my clothes are barely staying on, a sign of things to come? Probably, but also just that my mom always bought the size I was supposed to be in and I was a runt.

I look like Michael Cera in this picture haha, also I am pretty sure that's my diaper that's visible... mom hadn't taught me to sit like a lady yet. If I were famous this shot would be all over Perezhilton.com

Let me begin my 3 part apology for my hair by saying that I think you're all awesome, secondly... just kidding, I rocked that perm for like 2 years. That pose is professional though, check it.

This is when I was well into my tom boy stage that didn't end... until well, ever. I'm still a tom boy. I think I actually had that shirt up until like sophomore year of college, then I left it in a washer.

That cat looks like it wants to get the hell away from me. Bam-bam (my puppy) was pretty content though. Also WHY AM I WEARING A POODLE SKIRT?!?! Was this taken in 1970?!

Anyways, that's me! Hope you enjoy these ridiculous photos as much as I did haha.

(30) Days of Me: Day 9 [Carry This Picture]

Day 9 already?!?! Time's flying, today's challenge was to post a picture that I took. Usually my pictures aren't the greatest, but when I was overseas I got super lucky a lot... I'm going to post a few today just because I couldn't choose :)

This was the first night we went to the Eiffel Tower for wine in the sunset. Also the first of 2 times I climbed all 710 stairs (it was tough)

These are the bulls running 5 feet in front of me at the running of the bulls in Pamplona (I was pretty sure I was going to die)

This is Россия-Матушка or Mother Russia, the Statue of Liberty only goes to her shoulder at it's tallest point (Mother Russia is also free standing, and I read it's in danger of tipping over)

This is Rome at sunset see, sometimes I do get lucky!

(30) Days of Me: Day 8 [I Miss You]

Day 8 is a photo that makes me angry or sad, I was trying to think of a photo and almost didn't put this photo up:

The main reason I almost didn't post it is because yeah, it makes me angry/sad, but it also makes me happy and regretful. Anyone who's lost a loved one knows what I mean. Kevin was taken from us a year and a half agao, and I'm still angry, angry that he was taken away from us. I'm more sad than you can imagine, I don't think the pain of losing someone ever goes away, we just get numb to it after a while. BUT at the same time this picture just makes me remember all of the ridiculously good times Kevin gave everyone and that, that makes me happy.

Title song is Blink 182- I Miss You, miss you more than you know Kevin.

(30) Days of Me: Day 7 [At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)]

Today's challenge was a picture that makes me happy. HERE IT IS

This picture was our last day in Volgograd, Russia, before splitting up (most went home, I backpacked around Europe.) This makes me happy for so many reasons:

1) The Russians were amazing, I still talk to some of them and they treated us with nothing but respect.

(30) Days of Me: Day 6 [Call Me Up]

As many of you know, I go to more concerts than is probably healthy, and in the modern music industry it truly is an amazing find when you get a musician who's genuinely interested in their fans. At a small concert at a dingy bar called Mac's in East Lansing, I had the opportunity to meet one such artist. Back in 2007 I saw Charlotte Sometimes with Every Avenue, I had never heard her music before the show but I was intrigued. Her set wasn't working well (piano issues) and I got the chance to talk with her before the set for about 3o minutes, getting to know an artist always makes you appreciate their music more. I saw her again at Warped Tour '08, and got the chance to pick up some much needed merch and have another brief conversation, what I learned, Jessica Poland is an all around cool person.

Before I get into the review of her new EP "Sideways" let me state that her first studio album "Waves and the Both of Us" is one of my favorite cd's to pop in while driving around during the summer with the windows down. It's an anthem to girl power with an upbeat folk-pop feel. If you haven't heard it in it's entirety you're missing out. All my friends have added the songs to their collection and are the better for it.

That being said I jumped at the opportunity to review the new Charlotte Sometimes EP "Sideways", which is a self-released free EP that you can all get HERE (Do it... seriously, like now!). I didn't know what to expect after downloading the EP, I'd only heard one track before hand, and you'll all be glad to know I was pleasantly surprised. As much as I loved the first c.d. after the past year of lackluster follow up albums from almost every band this year (read: All Time Low, Every Avenue, etc), I'd begun to lower my expectations. "Sideways" has restored my faith in quality pop music.

The first thing I noticed about this album was the perceptibly more acoustic sound, this EP is more "raw" you could say. I actually prefer this to "Waves and the Both of Us" for the mere fact that it allows Jessica's voice to shine through. I also like this cd because I find it more "relateable" than her previous album.

The first track "Bad Bad World" which is all about being told to get over something, even when you're not ready. Not only an homage to getting inexplicably dumped by her record label, but a song anyone who's ever had their heart broken. People often tell us to feel something different than what we do, this is an anthem to say to them "I'm going to feel what I want to feel."

The next track "Better Than This" could be interpreted in so many different ways, which to me is a sign of a great song. It could be referring to any various heartbreak one might face, be it a relationship, a friendship, whatever. Again, this song also features a much more acoustic feel that fits perfectly with the tone of the song.

The title track "Sideways" is one of my favorite on the EP. On the surface it seems like another homage to her lost record deal, but again, anyone can relate to it. This song contained probably my favorite lyric on the c.d. "It's all good 'til it's not."

My favorite song on the c.d. "Call Me Up" (Title track to this post) is a great summer track, it has a much more poppy feel than the other tracks and it has a highly addicting chorus. It's the kind of song that makes you want to jump around, definitely a much needed upbeat song to the c.d.

"Ooh Love" is the only song I had heard before the EP was released and is one of the few tracks that reminds me of her past work. Much more uptempo and filled with various instruments galore. It's one of the shorter tracks and when it's done all you want is for it to keep going. I remember hearing it before listening to the whole album and thinking that this album was going to be exactly the same as "Waves and the Both of Us" luckily I was wrong.

The last track "Hurt The Good" was a risky move in my book, it's by far the darkest most pain filled track on the cd. Which can do one of two things to a listener, make them feel sad, or make them fall even more in love with the cd. In this case, for me at least, it made me just want to listen to the cd again, which is exactly what I did.

If you haven't by now, download the EP, it's FREE why wouldn't you. I will personally guarantee you'll find a song that you can relate to on "Sideways" and it's great to know that you're helping out an artist who's mega-awesome. Once you pick up the free EP go ahead and buy "Waves and the Both of Us" and then get tickets when she heads out on tour again. Trust me, it's totally worth it.

(30) Days of Me: Day 5 [Call It Off]

I'm kind of too excited about tomorrows post to focus on today's but more on that later. Today's post is my favorite quote. This was a tough one for me, there are so many quotes from so many wise people but I found one that I always find comforting when I'm feeling eh. I think the fact the quote is from Joseph Gordon Levitt (one of my future husbands) only makes me love it (and him) even more. I'm not even sure how I stumbled upon the quote but I'm about to drop some knowledge on you. You ready?

"I think there is something beautiful in reveling in sadness. The proof is in how beautiful sad songs can be. So I don't think being sad is to be avoided. It's apathy and boredom you want to avoid. But feeling anything is good, I think. Maybe that's sadistic of me."

I don't find that quote sadistic at all, in fact, I find it empowering. Growing up, were never allowed to be sad, when we were, adults encouraged us to get happy. This leaves us incapable of coping with sadness as adults. I think that's a problem with our society. I think being sad is as vital a part to life as being happy. Being sad means that you know you had something great and you are now missing it, that makes you more aware next time you get it back. Maybe that's just me, and good 'ol JGL who feel that way haha. [Sidenote: I'm so excited for his new movie "Inception"]

For the title song I used a Tegan and Sara song (big surprise I know) but they're known for their sad songs, and Call It Off is one of the saddest, but it's beautiful at the same time. This is what I envision JGL talking about in the above quote. What other songs can you guys think of that qualify haha.

Now onto the exciting news, tomorrow I will be reviewing Charlotte Sometimes new EP, I'm stoked for you all to here it, I'm a long time fan and I think you guys will love it!

(30) Days of Me: Day 4 [Voldemort Can't Stop the Rock]

Day 4 of (30) Days of Me is my favorite book. Like this was even a real question. Harry Potter all the way... now if you make me pick one book of the series, that's where I'll run into a problem. Instead of writing a more detailed post on the issue I'll just direct everyone to this post:

No other book has ever held my attention or been something I could share with so many friends.

Kudos to you JK Rowling.. I owe you one!

(30) Days of Me: Day 3 [The Final Countdown]

Anyone who's been around me for more than a week knows that I watch a lot of tv. They also probably know that my love for one show far surpasses my love for any other. Day 3 of this shindig is my favorite television show and that ladies and gents is ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT:

I watched this show from the beginning and you have no idea how sad I was when it got cancelled a mere 3 seasons after winning over my heart. What's not to love Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, David Cross, Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, among others. Along with some of the best ever guest spots by Liza Minelli, Charlize Theron, and Julia Louis Dreyfus. This show is had some of the smartest, funniest humor of all time, people just never caught on... what really makes me angry is that this show started at the exact same time as Two and a Half Men, how did that make it and Arrested didn't?!?! grrrrrr. Anyways, whenever I'm feeling sad I just pop in a DVD and laugh along with the gang. The title video today is a tribute to Gob Bluth using the song the Final Countdown, which he always danced to in the show.

I would be remise if I didn't include that my second favorite show, which is inching closer and closer to Arrested with every episode aired is 30 Rock. It's the same kind of humor with just as amazing of a cast. If it keeps up, I might just have to call it a tie.

What are your favorite shows?

(30) Days of Me: Day 2 [Tiny Dancer]

Alright guys, you'll notice that I"m still trying to include a song with each post, but it's got to be relevant, I'm not just going to throw a random song at you guys. LUCKILY Day 2 of this project asks me what my favorite movie is... and even luckier is that my favorite movie is ALMOST FAMOUS (2000)

If you haven't seen the movie SHAME ON YOU and go rent it immediately. In 2000 I was 12 and well into my alternative rock, anything to do with music ways, I can't even remember how many times I saw this movie in theatres but it wasn't enough. Never before have I found movie I so related to. This movie is the reason that no many how TERRIBLE movies Kate Hudson makes, I still will see them all. Not to mention my man Jay Baruchel is in it... although he's a tiny boy... but this movie was when I fell in love with him!

Anyways, those of you have seen the movie will know that one of the pivotal scenes is the band on the bus singing Tiny Dancer, to this day it just makes me smile watching it. Click the title to see it for yourself... or go get the movie! Not only is this my favorite movie, but it contains my favorite line from any movie I've ever seen, one of my top ten quotes of all time. Over the years, I've thought about this quote several times, and how it applies to me. In the movie Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) says:

"I always tell the girls never take it seriously, if you never take it seriously you never get hurt, you always have fun, and if you ever get lonely... just go to the record store and visit your friends."

Music has always held a huge part of my heart and soul, and always will. I feel like the musicians are my friends, writing songs for me like I told them my secrets and they were helping me out. That's probably why I love this movie so much, more so than any move I've ever seen, it talks about how much peoples lives are affected by music.

What's your favorite movie? See you tomorrow! And watch the clip!

So here we go.... obviously we all have trouble picking out a favorite song, it's tough, there are so many. There's one song I always go back to but I think it's more that I love the lyrics. The only recordings of the songs are pretty shady and I really with they'd re-record it with better quality but my song is:

Tegan and Sara :: Beauty

(Lyrics)
Woke up with beauty in my bed,
and isn't it sad,
How we don't know it's beauty until it's dead.
And it's beauty that I knew so well,
but she wasn't doing too well.
Well, I just wanna go someplace,
where no one knows my name,
and I don't have to explain,
no I don't have to retain.
That I lie to myself or protect myself,
for the benefit of myself.
I want power in my words,
I want passion in my eyes,
and when I wake up,
I want life to be a surprise.
And I guess that I didn't know it all along,
and I guess that I never guessed,
that'd I'd ever guess wrong.
And I set myself up every time you leave,
to destroy the things I've got,
For the things I need.
Each conversation separate from themselves,
separates good from bad.
And they never want what you got,
Until it's up for grabs,
and then they want what you have,
they want what you have.
Well I just want to go someplace,
where no one knows my face,
and I don't have to explain,
and no I don't have to retain.
That I lie to myself,
that I protect myself.
For the benefit of myself.
I want power in my words,
I want passion in my eyes,
and when I wake up,
I want life to be a surprise.
And I guess that I didn't know it all along,
And I'll never guess that,
I'd ever go ahead and guess wrong.
And I set myself up every time you leave,
To deny the things I love,
for the things I need, for the things I need.
I want to break through, to break through.
Oh I want one thing, I wanted,
to come through, oh to come true.
I want passion in my eyes,
I want power in my words,
and when I wake up,
I want life to be a surprise.
And I never thought that I'd wake up
and be starving for you.
No I never thought, that I'd wake up
and I'd be hungry, I'm hungry for you.
To break through to break through,
I want one thing I wanted to come through,
Ah to come true.
I want power in my words,
I want passion in my eyes,
and when I wake up,
I want life to be a surprise.
And I guess that I didn't know it all along,
and I'll never guess that
I'd ever ever go ahead and guess wrong.
Oh I want to break through, to break through.
I want one thing I've dreamed for to come true.
To come through.
Oh I set myself up every time you leave,
to destroy the things I've got,
for the things I need.
To destroy the things I love, for the things I've seen.
(Lyrics)

Besides the fact that the bolded lyrics have been my mantra for as long as I can remember (this song was released on their red demo, which I've been listening to since 1999), I mean I formed my youth around living to that motto. It doesn't get much better than that kids. Just kidding, we all have songs that are close to us, and for me, this goes with me almost as far back as I can recall. Over the years my understanding of the song has shifted about as I've gone through different phases, but as close as I can pin it down, to me this song means being better than what you are, striving to be the person you've always wanted to be, if that makes sense.

So there you have it, the title will take you to one of the better recordings I've found of it. So enjoy.

See you tomorrow! EEK!

(I'm going to suspend the comics for this 3o days for fear I will run out, sorry Matthue!)
